This song is very loosely based on the story of Joan of Arc, where an ordinary person believes they’re following the word of their god and doing what’s right for their people. And for a time, it looks like it’s all going exactly as planned. More followers join the pack, more power and trust is given to their new leader and then it starts to become more about being a figurehead than doing the right thing. It’s no longer “god’s word,” it’s now “god’s word through me” which eventually becomes “my word.” As the saying goes, absolute power corrupts absolutely, and when the inevitable happens and the truth is revealed that everyone was just following a megalomaniac with an agenda, not from the gods at all but from a twisted mind, the ultimate fate of the heretic was to be burned at the stake.
